Hi, I moved to Hood River a few months ago, and although I am in love with the beauty, which is surreal, I will say the town is quite depressing for single guys who are in their 20ss. In all honesty, I came here to get away from everything and I have succeeded. This is a great family town and it seems almost everyone here are married couples with children who are refugees from other cities around the country, especially Portland and Seattle.
Where I screwed up is my original plan was that I could live in Hood River and spend time living away from the city, but would be able to commute to Portland area two or three times a week. Well, I was certainly wrong about all that. Yes, a gross miscalculation to say the least. The scenery is phenomenal, but I am dreading what it will be like in the Winter, as well as the way back at night you don’t see anything.
Anyhow, due to constraints on my budget, I cannot afford to go into Portland, but once a week or once every other week. SO, basically I am stuck here. It’s quite a ways out here and with the crazy gas prices, which will only get higher, I don’t think I will have any opportunity to commute in the near future.
I’ve realized also that the town doesn’t host much in the way of amenities for those who are not very wealthy. A majority of the stores and restaurants in the town are catered towards the tourists and are too expensive for those not vacationing or with a middle class income. Also, it seems a lot of the hiking trails are a bit farther from town than I anticipated.
